Five whiskies I absolutely hated

04/07/2024

Hey Everyone! Today we are doing something different. There are whiskies we LOVE, there are whiskies we are OK with and then there are whiskies we HATE. Today I will present you five whiskies that I absolutely hated and there are no way on God's green Earth that I would ever buy nor taste any of them ever again. Period. This list might contain a whisky or two that might surprise you.

I say HATED because it doesn't mean it's BAD. It means that I don't like BUT it can still be good for other people.

Disclaimer: Everyones taste and what they like can differ, keep in mind that these ratings here are ONLY MY OPINION, and I rate them according to my taste and my preference to give you a general idea if they might be worth picking up.

The list starts with the highest rated (by me) and the one I hate the least.

Hope you enjoy this article. Let's get into it shall we?

Teeling 2008 Single Malt bottled for WhiskyNET Tokaji finish - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 57.3%

This whiskey was bottled for WhiskyNET here in Hungary. It was matured in a Sherry Hogshead and then finished for 4 months in Patricius Tokaji Aszú barrels.

What is Tokaji Aszú?

Tokaji or Tokay is the name of the wines from the Tokaj wine region (also Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region or Tokaj-Hegyalja) in Hungary. This region is noted for its sweet wines made from grapes affected by noble rot, a style of wine which has a long history in this region. The "nectar" coming from the grapes of Tokaj is also mentioned in the national anthem of Hungary.

As you go the experience declines. Nose is the best part, palate is fine also but the finish is just terrible. Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) is just there to say: "hey, I am here and I suck."

Nose: Sherry, dark fruits, maltiness some vanilla and oak, slightly alcoholic too, there are 0 traces of the Tokaji wine here at all.

Taste: Quite strong on arrival, plums, raisins, sultanas, red berries and chocolate and only then at the very end some grapes and some of that 'noble rot' taste.

Finish: Absolutely terrible for me as with most Tokaji wine finished whiskies, it has that rot again from the Botrytis cinerea which rots the grape from what the wine is created from, terrible.

A definite try if you like these more rotten type of Tokaji wine finishes because you will most likely love it but if you didn't like previous whiskies with Tokaji that had this type of style then stay away from it. I'd guess if I wasn't disgusted by that rot taste I'd give this a solid 83. But it's me and it's my opinion so I'm honest and this is getting only 75 / 100.

Edradour 12 yo 2023 batch - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 46%

I'll be completely blunt. I had amazing Edradour bottles. I even had a batch of this 12 yo I think in 2022 that was amazing. That was fruity and tasty. I also think that some of Signatory Vintage's bottlings from Edradour are outstanding and simply amazing price per value. But this one.... Oh God. As you guys now I don't really like sherry bombs now do I? Also I absolutely hate modern seasoned sherry casks if it's not done right. Well this whisky ticks both of those boxes in my opinion. One: it's a sherry bomb, and two: there is no way that this is not seasoned. A recipe for disaster.

Edradour distillery (Scottish Gaelic: Eadar Dhà Dhobhar, "between two rivers") is a Highland single malt whisky distillery based in Pitlochry, Perthshire. It has been owned by the Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Company since 2002, and was previously owned by Pernod Ricard.

Signatory, founded in 1988, is primarily an independent bottler and is based in Pitlochry.

Nose: Cured meats bleh, leathery smells. Rotten fruits, like when you leave the fruits on the trees in the orchard and they just get rotten fall on the ground and they start to ferment. Very acidic and very maybe even too oaky. No traces of sherry fruits or fresh fruits.

Taste: Very agressive. Even at 46% it stings like a wasp. Sulfurs and acid. Smoked meats and fresh leather. Rotten, fermented fruits and ethanol. Again, no fruits no nothing. Terrible.

Finish: It's bad, medium length and very alcoholic. Too much oak, too much sulfurs and very acidic. Not for me.

Extreme disappointment. I though that this will be good after my previous experiences with Edradour. But no. It was terrible. Can it be a bad batch that skipped quality control? No. The rating of this batch is quite ok, so it's only my taste and I just hate it. 75 / 100

Isle of Jura 10 yo - Colored, Chill filtered, 40%

No surprises here. People don't like Jura. For a time I didn't know why. Well after this whisky, I kinda have an idea why.

Jura distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery on the island of Jura in the Inner Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland. Jura's current offering comprises 26 single malt whiskies (sooooo many room for fault...) that are divided over three product series: Signature, Travel Exclusive and Rare & Limited.

Nose: Cardboard box that was stained with fruit juice, alcoholic sting, some salt, very tiny amount of vanilla.

Taste: Cardboard box again, salty, the peat can be felt here but it's very minimal, dry, has some bitterness that is terrible, sour, the plastic taste when you finish a lollipop and you accidentally lick it's plastic part.

Finish: Short, sour, alcoholic and terrible.

Now I see why everyone hates on Jura's basic core range. Bad casks, terrible sour and bitter whisky with almost 0 character and 0 complexity. Nose is way better than the taste and finish....the nose is actually promising a bit but then..... you get a huge load of disappointment. 70 / 100.

The Wild Geese Classic Blend - Colored, Chill filtered, 40%

The Wild Geese is part of the Avalon International Management Inc. Internationally acclaimed collection of Premium Irish Spirits, winners of 71 major spirit awards to date. It's already very fishy when they say PREMIUM.

A friend of mine challenged me to try it because he said it's that bad, well I took on the challenge and yes it is that bad.

Nose: CIF Cream Lemon, ethanol, grain.

Taste:  Very thin. Maybe some lemons here aswell with grain notes. Ethanol and it has a bite and certain sourness.

Finish: Nonexistent. Sour and alcoholic.

No thanks. No a thousand times. A very good example of a young whiskey with the usage of very bad casks. I'm very sad about this. I was told that it was gonna be bad but I still intended to try it. I couldn't even finish my dram. I rarely pour whisk(e)y down the drain. This was one of those times. 64 / 100.

Grant's The Family Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky -Colored, Chill filtered, 40%

Grant's is a blended Scotch whisky, produced by the company William Grant & Sons in Scotland. It is the world's third highest selling Scotch whisky. Grant's blended whiskies are made using grain whisky from the Girvan distillery as the invariant base, with which a variety of single malts and other grain whiskies are blended. The full range includes the Grant's Triple Wood, Triple Wood Smoky, Ale Cask Finish, Rum Cask Finish, 8 Year Old Sherry Cask Finish, Triple Wood 12 Year Old, Rare 18 Year Old and the 25 Year Old blended Scotch whiskies.

Nose: Alcohol, medical, blunt.

Taste: Strong, bitter, oaky.

Finish: Very sour, bitterness and oakiness

Good for parties, when your only goal is to get drunk. Good for mixing with coke. One of the worst whiskies I've ever tasted neat. AVOID IT AT ALL COST. 58 / 100.
