Macallan 12 & 15 & 30

06/05/2024

Hey Everyone! Today I am back with a review that I wanted to do for a long time. Three Macallan bottles that are great drinking whiskies if you like sherried, sweet whiskies. Also as most of you know, Macallan is one of my favaourite distillery. "My favourite distilleries include: ✅Ardnamurchan, GlenDronach, Glenfarclas, Macallan, Highland Park, Tullibardine, Kavalan✅ (❌not much of a peathead, even tho I drink peated samples(!) but usually never full bottles❌)" The Macallan 18 years old is one of my favourite 18 year old whisky. You can check out my review of that by clicking HERE.

The Macallan distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Craigellachie in Moray in the north-east of Scotland. The Macallan Distillers Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Edrington, which purchased the brand from Highland Distillers in 1999. The Macallan is generally considered to be the second or third highest-selling single-malt scotch, next to Glenfiddich and, by some accounts, Glenlivet. Originally, the Macallan was matured only in oak sherry casks brought to the distillery from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Then they released several ranges and special editions with different types of casks such as bourbon casks. Their core range consists of the 12-15-18 year old Double Cask, 12-18-25-30 year old Sherry Oak and the 12-15 year old Triple Cask. The Macallan is considered to be one of the most prestigious whiskies of the scotch world. This is reflected in their pricing also. The most expensive bottle ever sold was of course a Macallan, The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60 Year Old for a whopping 2.7 million dollars, which would be 2.5 million euros.

Macallan 12 years old Double Cask - Natural Color, Chill filtered, 40%

"The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old forms part of our Double Cask range which marries the classic Macallan style and the unmistakable sweetness of American oak. This is a fully rounded single malt in perfect balance, with flavours of fudge, citrus and soft spice."

Nose: Black dried fruits, sherry and raisins. Typical Macallan nose. Now getting some juicy oranges and cinnamon with some ginger.

Taste:  It's so extremely smooth and rounded. First impression you are getting is the sherry influence kicking in with the dried fruits and raisins. Then the ginger coming through with oranges and some citrus. It's just extremely pleasant.

Finish: For a 40% it's long and lovely. Ginger comes through with some wood tannins, butterscotch and chocolate.

Overall this is a beginners whisky. It's quite smooth and rounded and it doesn't have a lot of complexity. But it delivers those sherry and american oak notes very well and very pronounced. This is an easy drinker and even a "not-whisky-lover" person would find it nice to drink also. As someone who have tasted over 700 whiskies I wouldn't buy any more bottles of this because simply it is a bit flat and not interesting for me. But it's quite ok, if someone pours me a dram I ain't gonna say no. 83 / 100

Macallan 15 years old Double Cask - Natural Color, Chill filtered, 43%

"The Macallan Double Cask 15 Years Old is a balanced single malt whisky created by bringing the perfect harmony of two oaks into one exceptional single malt whisky. Sherry seasoned American oak adds delicate vanilla to the subtle spice of European oak, delivering a whisky with a sweeter, warmer taste and character."

Nose: Black/dried fruits, figs, raisins, orange and some citrus in the background, baking spices, a hint of cinnamon, sherry, ginger, butterscotch.

Taste: Full body, honey, ginger, hazelnuts, sherry, orange and lemon in the background, some cinnamon, baking spices, sweet, butterscotch, some oakiness follows

Finish: Long, ginger, oaky, dark chocolate, hazelnuts, butterscotch.

Overall this is a great whisky. HOWEVER. The price is just too high. If it would be around 60-70€ then it would be a great deal. But it's well over 100€ lately and it's definitely not worth that. If you can find it in a bar or you can find it in a great deal then by all means pick it up, it's great. But don't OVERPAY FOR THIS. Great whisky, not so great price. 87 / 100

Macallan 30 years old Sherry Oak 2020 release- Natural Color, Non-chill Filtered, 43%

When as a beginner I had the Macallan 12 for the first time I said to myself that if the opportunity presents it, I will buy a sample of it. And holy heaven and earth it did. The price was very high but I really wanted to taste this. I bought it from a reputable website to be 100% sure that it's the real deal. Well when you take a look at the pricing of this bottle at whiskybase.com you can see that it's anywhere from 5770€ to 8100€. Sweet Jesus. It's insane. The price is insane. It's definitely not worth it. Let's see though what it delivers.

"The Macallan Sherry Oak 30 Years Old forms part of our Sherry Oak range which features a series of single malt whiskies matured in hand-picked sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez for richness and complexity. Deliciously smooth with a long, rich finish, the natural dark mahogany colour of the 30 Years Old is the richest in the range."

Nose: Fruit jam. Knipschildt chocolate cake with whipped cream, cherries and raspberries. Beautiful oak scent..you can feel the 30 years. Malt, very soft citrus aromas in the background. Mainly orange. Very nice.

Taste: Flavor bomb. Milk chocolate, dates, figs and plum jam. Cherry and raspberry..maybe a little blackberry too. Chocolate covered orange. Oak and malt. It is very, very balanced, just like the 18- and 25-year-old "little brothers".

Finish: Spicy and sweet. The taste stays in our mouths for long, minutes, or do I just imagine it? Oak and chocolate.

Overall this is one of the best I've ever had. Very good. These aged Macallans play very well at 43%..no need to be scared. 96 / 100

I'm sorry I only have one sample...but I don't think I'd buy a bottle of it for almost €6000 anytime soon. If so, I wouldn't open it at all.

This was perhaps the highlight of my Macallan journey. It beats both the 25 year old and Oscuro for me.
