Three Old Perth bottles I really enjoyed

29/07/2024

Welcome back Ladies & Gents. I haven't done a "triple review" for quite a while, I think it is time for one. Today I will review three bottles from Morrisons Scotch Whisky Distillers Old Perth range. All three bottles are presented at cask strength and with natural color and they are non-chill filtered. I really think these are great picks at a great price. Let's dive right into it.

About Morrisons Scotch Whisky Distillers

Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers is solely owned and operated by one of Scotland's oldest and most prominent whisky families, Jamie and Brian Morrison.

They own the following brands: Cárn Mór, Old Perth, Mac-Talla and Bruadar Single Malt. And they also own Aberargie distillery.

About Old Perth & the city

The Scottish city of Perth was historically the home of many a whisky company. It was the blending capital of the world where great blended malts were created however, over time, Perth became the forgotten whisky city.

Perth is a centrally located Scottish city, on the banks of the River Tay. It is the administrative centre of Perth and Kinross council area and is the historic county town of Perthshire.

The founding of Perth Academy in 1760 helped to bring major industries to the city, including the production of linen, leather, bleach and whisky. Perth was fortuitously placed to become a key transport centre with the coming of the railways, and its first station was built in 1848.

Peter Thomson started out in the grocery, wine and spirits business in Perth in 1908 and very soon established his own whisky blends. One of these was Old Perth, which proved popular in the on-trade throughout its existence. As the company evolved into a wholesale agency and wine and spirits distributor, Old Perth was somewhat sidelined by its stablemate Beneagles, so Thomson's travellers incentivised deals with customers by including a bottle of Old Perth with every case of Beneagles.

By 1969 sales of Old Perth were stagnant, although it was recorded that due to the high malt content (and inclusion of the Macallan), it was regarded as one of the best blends available.

In 1973 the retail side of the business was wound up to concentrate solely on wholesale and distribution. Old Perth was eventually replaced in Peter Thomson's portfolio by Beneagles Deluxe due to the latter's growing success.

In 1983 the company was sold to the Stakis organisation which then sold Peter Thomson (Perth) Ltd on in 1985 to Leith-based Charles Mackinlay & Co., the sister company of Waverley Vintners Limited, owned by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries plc. Later that year Mackinlay was acquired by Invergordon Distillers which itself later became part of Whyte & Mackay.

In 2014 Morrison & Mackay expanded into Scotch blending with the acquisition of the Old Perth brand, which it re-launched as an ex-Sherry cask matured blended malt.

Following the decline of the local whisky industry, the city diversified its economy.

Old Perth brings together the finest of sherry matured malt whisky from a selection of pedigree Speyside distilleries and expertly blends them in our home city of Perth, Scotland.

Nobody knows exactly what single malts they use at Old Perth. There have been many speculations. Some people say that this blended malt contains whiskies from Macallan, Dalmore, Glenrothes, Craigallachie, Blair Athol and Mortlach. All of these whiskies are of stellar quality.

"THE FINEST SHERRY MATURED SCOTCH MALT WHISKIES SPECIALLY SELECTED TO HONOUR THE BIRTHPLACE OF BLENDING."

Old Perth Cask Strength - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 58.6%

Nose: Very hefty and full nose. Not complicated, pleasant. Sherry aromas, dried figs, plums, peaches, toffee and espresso. A nice undertone with spices such as cinnamons and cardamom. A hint of oak at the back. Very inviting. The alcohol is well hidden.

Taste: Very fruity and sweet. Warming due to the high ABV. It has a nice structure, very oily. Figs and mostly plums with espresso. Christmas spices appear such as cinnamon. Vanilla with toasted aromas, citrus fruits, tobacco, leather and oak aromas. Mint. Not alcoholic at all.

Finish: Long finish. Dark chocolate. Cocoa. Sour notes. Lots of spices. Ginger, chili and black pepper. Traces of red fruits. Drying and strong.

Overall I think this whisky is awesome, especially for what you can get it. It costs a whopping 39 EUROS where I live. Insane right? I think this rivals the 105 or even dare I say, it's better than the newer 105 bottles. I love the presentation of Old Perth, the bottle the box, everything. This whisky is getting a solid 85 / 100. Buy it, open it, drink it, enjoy it.

Old Perth Pedro Ximénez - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 56.2%

"VELVETY TEXTURE WITH RAISINS, DATES AND CANDIED FRUITS, LEADING INTO DARK CHOCOLATE AND COCOA. THIS EXPRESSION HAS BEEN MATURING IN PEDRO XIMENEZ BUTTS AND HOGSHEADS, ALLOWING FOR EXPLORATION OF THE COMPLEX FLAVOURS WITHIN THIS BLENDED MALT."

Nose: Jeez. Wow. This is so so very sweet. Instantly lots of dark fruits such as figs, raisins, dates and caramelized oranges. Cherries and apricots, as well as plum jam. Spicy oak and slightly sour citrus fruits are also there with a hint of espresso trying to balance the scales between sweet & sour but with no luck.

Taste: Very thick mouthfeel. It coats the palate quite well. One can say that it is syrupy. Firstly a pepper rush and then spicy oak followed by mint. Then dates and raisins. Dark oranges, sweet overripe apricots and red apples. Grandma's fruit jam and sugar frosted vanilla cake. A hint of citrus with espresso and cinnamon. Lovely. Sweet and spicy.

Finish: Long finish, creamy, warming. Lots of fruit such as apricots and figs with a hint of tropical sweetness. A pepper rush with mint. Espresso and dark chocolate. Great.

Overall I think it is a better version of the original Cask Strength expression. This has a bit more depth, a bit more age I would say and it offers much more in terms of the taste. It's also a bit pricier, if I remember correctly it was around 50 EUROS where I live. Still it's worth it. This is getting a very high 89 / 100. Lovely malt whisky, get it and enjoy it.

Old Perth Palo Cortado - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 55.8%

"PALO CORTADO IS A WINE OF GREAT COMPLEXITY WHICH COMBINES THE DELICATE BOUQUET OF AN AMONTILLADO WITH THE BODY AND PALATE OF AN OLOROSO. AN ELEGANT, DRY SHERRY WITH PRONOUNCED NUTTINESS THAT BEAUTIFULLY SHOWCASES THE DELICATE INTERPLAY BETWEEN THE RICHNESS OF SCOTCH WHISKY AND THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF PALO CORTADO SHERRY CASKS."

Nose: Sweet syrup, very fruity. Hazelnuts and almonds. Dried fruits such as figs and raisins. Canned peaches and mango that is marinated into sugary sweet water. Cocoa and espresso. Milk chocolate. A pinch of spices such as cinnamon and cloves. A hint of spicy oak and mint. Lovely albeit a bit too sweet nose for some.

Taste: Hefty, mouth coating. Syrupy as expected. Spicy oak followed by a pepper rush and mint due to the high ABV of the whisky. Still it's not alcoholic at all. Lots of vanilla and caramel. Canned peaches and mango. Pineapple. Symple syrup. Cocoa and espresso. A hint of sea salt and brine. Espresso and sour dark chocolate. The taste is way more balanced than the nose and it is not too sweet at all. Great.

Finish: Long finish. Pepper rush. Quite thick. Spicy oak followed by sweet canned fruits and cocoa. Espresso and dark chocolate.

Overall I think this is a great edition too. If I had to pick between this and the PX version I'd pick this. It's a bit more unique and complicated. The salty taste was very unexpected but very very welcome. I love salt in my whisky. This however is around 55 EUROS where I live, so it got more expensive as it could have been expected. Every year they are getting a bit more expensive. So with that said, this whisky is getting a very solid and very high 90 / 100. Lovely complexity, balance and taste. I recommend this wholehearteadly. Buy it.
