10 whiskies to gift this Christmas to us Whisky Lovers
Hey Everyone, welcome back. Today I will be bringing you a list of 10 whiskies that I think are great presents to us Whisky Lovers this Christmas. This is an unpeated version of the list, I will be bringing you a peated list soon.
Christmas is right around the corner. Do you know what to buy to your fellow Whisky Lovers, if you have any in your family or friends? I am here to help you. I know the world we live in got extremely expensive, we would like to spend as little for as good of a quality as we can. I picked 10 bottles that are great and even advanced / seasoned whisky drinkers can appreciate for a reasonable price.
I am going to list them for you by descending price, starting with the most expensive and then we will work our way down to the cheapest. Let's get into it.
Bunnahabhain 12 year old - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 46.3% -61€
"This entry level Bunnahabhain bottling comes in a redesigned bottle. This 12 year old single malt Scotch whisky is a light, fresh dram, bottled at the higher strength of 46.3% - for more complexity and flavour."
Nose: Fresh and sweet right away. Very welcoming. Heavy sherry influence which I don't mind because the DNA of the distillery still shines through. Coastal notes. Walking on the coast of Islay, fresh ocean air breezing through your hair. Salty air and water with a hint of seaweed. Plums, figs, cherries and sultanas.
Taste: Soft, subtle. Plums, figs loads of cherries and very nutty. A little sweetness, malty, juicy. Coastal elements, salt and seaweed.
Finish: Sherried, mochaccino, balanced salty tang.
This is one of my favourite 12 years old whisky still to this day. It is also one of my highest reated and most loved whiskies. It has a great complex taste and amazing nose. I hope this will be keeping the ok-ish price tag it has in this crazy market. 94 / 100
Bushmills 14 Málaga Cask - Natural Color(?), Non-chill filtered(?), 40% -55.6€
"Bushmills 14 Year Old is one of the most innovative Irish single malts we've ever made. Exclusively matured in first and second-fill bourbon barrels for a minimum of 14 years, including a finish of up to 12 months in rare Malaga wine casks to give a luscious exotic fruit intensity and beautiful smoothness. By only using bourbon casks, the vanilla sweetness is allowed to shine, so when we layer on the fruit intensity from the Malaga casks, it only enhances the sweetness - taking it to new heights."
Nose: Green apples with lots of vanilla and toffee. Apricot jam and pear juice. Sweet manuka honey, seville oranges, cinnamon and oak spice. Lovely nose.
Taste: Wow. Fresh apples, apricot and pear. Then the wine cask influence really kicks in with grapes, mango and some raisins. Tropical fruits such as pineapple. Spicy. Ginger, cinnamon and oak spice. Lots of vanilla and toffee. Very complex, very round and sweet. The 40% abv works very well here, this is what always surprises me with Bushmills. Their ability to be so tasty and complex at 40% abv.
Finish: Long. Sweet and complex. Lots of vanilla, seville oranges and cinnamon. This is a great finish.
Overall I have to say that this is a very well put together whiskey. The nose is magnificent and I could nose this for the whole night, the taste is complex, smooth and nice. The finish is long enough so that you don't want another sip immediately. I will say that this is a great addition to their core range because it steps in between the 10 and the 16 and fills the price gap very well. 87 / 100
Element Lore Single Malt R/1.0 - Natural Color (?), Chill filtered (?), 43% -45.3€
"Element's Lore Series takes inspiration from traditional Irish Whiskies.
This exceptional Single Malt was crafted from ex-Bourbon, Madeira, and Sweet Moscatel casks, carefully selected to create a smooth, approachable whiskey that's full of depth and character.
The components of this single malt were decided by the crowd – bartenders, industry experts, whiskey societies and consumers. Bottled at 43%, this limited release will see bottles individually hand numbered."
Nose: Obviously you can smell that this is an Irish Whiskey. How? Green apples and fresh orchard fruits. Citrus fruits and maltiness. There are hints of raspberry and strawberry. Lovely toasted oak and spices. White grapes and chocolate. A very sweet and inviting nose.
Taste: It's very smooth, and drinkable. The taste is "darker" than the nose. The fresh orchard fruits are not so apparent here. You get more of dark fruit note such as fig jam. Strawberry jam. Coffe Latte with lots of cream on top. The maltiness is really powerful here too. I'm getting vanilla, caramelized apricots and toasted oak yet again. Lovely, complex taste.
Finish: Medium, but it's almost long. Smooth and tasty. Christmas spices, malted barley, vanilla, toffee, oak and fruits. It's great.
Overall this bottle is awesome. I think it's well worth it's asking price. I hope Element will release many more of these great bottlings. 87 / 100
Kingsbarns Falkland - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 46% -44.3€
"Kingsbarns Falkland has been distilled from barley sourced less than six miles from the Kingsbarns Distillery. Our limited release single malt has enjoyed maturation in two types of casks, maintaining balance and developing complexity.
Production Director Isabella Wemyss has carefully selected a combination of Ex-Bourbon and STR (shaved, toasted and re-charred) ex-Portuguese red wine casks to mature Falkland. The spirit comprises of 80% first fill ex-Bourbon barrels and 20% STR red wine casks to add another dimension to the whisky. This is an interesting take on our usual distillery style by ramping up our STR influence. This introduces greater warming spice notes, red fruits and even some chocolatey notes into the equation."
Nose: The nose starts off with a nice malty base. I left it in the glass for about 5 minutes just to let it breath a bit. Vanilla and fresh croissant along with butterscotch and apple pie with frosting. The port casks add a bit of red fruitiness in the form of raspberries and redcurrants. Some fresh orchard fruits in the background such as apples, pears and apricot.
Taste: On the palate it is very creamy and oily. Lots of vanilla, toffee and butterscotch. I am getting some grapes and pepper. There is a slight bitterness. Orchard fruits. The port influence is a lot stronger on the nose than here but you can still taste some raspberries in the back. Overall this is pleasant and nice.
Finish: Medium in length. Fruity and malty. No signs of afterburn from the alcohol. White chocolate, pepper and cloves.
Altogether this is a very nice young single malt, which is not unique in any shape or form but is very well put together and could be a very nice addition to your Whisky Lover friends shelf. 85 / 100
Glencadam Reserva PX -Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 46% - 44.3€
"Glencadam Reserva PX Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been created in small batches by our Master Distiller, who has carefully selected single malt matured in exceptional American oak ex-bourbon casks from our historic dunnage warehouses. The single malt in these casks has been expertly married then finished in hand selected Pedro Ximénez Sherry butts from Andalucía, Spain."
Nose: Very sweet and fresh (!). It's interesting that it is fresh because PX is a very influental wine cask and usually it supresses all freshness in most whiskies. However Glencadam's strong distillery DNA stands out. Green apples, ripe pears and tropical fruits such as mango. Then the PX shows through. Sweet syrup, blackberry jam and strawberry jam. Oranges, maraschino cherries, figs dates and prunes. Lots of milk chocolate and forest fruits. In my opinion this is a very nice and complex nose. I love the fact that the distillery character is present.
Taste: Wow. Very round and syrupy. Sweet, no sign of alcohol whatsoever. Blackcurrants and strawberries. Cherry flavoured Coca-Cola. Orchard fruits dipped in honey. A burst of forest fruits. Raspberry, blackberry and wild strawberry. Oranges, dates and figs with a chocolate coating. A hint of espresso and cinnamon. This is a very sweet experience. It's complex and deep, not one dimensonal thanks to the DNA of the distillery. It shows through in the taste too but it's much more in the background than it is in the nose.
Finish: Long finish, slightly tart. Vanilla, cherries and Campari. Very sweet and silky. Blackcurrants and strawberry are the most prominent notes here. Lovely.
Overall this is a well put together whisky. I firmly believe that this whisky retains the distillery DNA of Glencadam quite well and that this is not a young whisky, rather it's a blend of older and younger whiskies hence it's a no age statement bottle. I would recommend this to those who have a sweet tooth. 86 / 100
Old Perth Cask Strength - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 58.6% - 41.1€
"DELIVERING A ROBUST, EARTHY PALATE WITH POWERFUL GINGER AND CINNAMON SPICE. THIS UNADULTERATED WHISKY IS BOTTLED AT CASK STRENGTH TO REVEAL A FULL-BODIED AROMA."
Nose: Very hefty and full nose. Not complicated, pleasant. Sherry aromas, dried figs, plums, peaches, toffee and espresso. A nice undertone with spices such as cinnamons and cardamom. A hint of oak at the back. Very inviting. The alcohol is well hidden.
Taste: Very fruity and sweet. Warming due to the high ABV. It has a nice structure, very oily. Figs and mostly plums with espresso. Christmas spices appear such as cinnamon. Vanilla with toasted aromas, citrus fruits, tobacco, leather and oak aromas. Mint. Not alcoholic at all.
Finish: Long finish. Dark chocolate. Cocoa. Sour notes. Lots of spices. Ginger, chili and black pepper. Traces of red fruits. Drying and strong.
Overall I think this whisky is awesome, especially for what you can get it. I think this rivals the Glenfarclas 105 or even dare I say, it's better than the newer 105 bottles. I love the presentation of Old Perth, the bottle the box, everything. 85 / 100
Arran 10 year old - Natural Color, Non-chill filtered, 46% - 37.6€
"Our classic Arran 10 Year Old Single Malt encompasses the unique taste of the beautiful island we call home and is one of the best single malt whiskies Scotland has to offer. Don't just take our word for it! Our award-winning whisky has had plenty of recognition throughout the years, even being named one of the 20 defining whiskies of the past 20 years! (Malt Advocate 20th Anniversary Issue 2011)"
Nose: Ah the freshness, citrus, green apple, pears, freshly cut grass, peach and some honey in the background with some vanilla and toffee.
Taste: Extremely complex for a 10 yr, orchard fruits then some oak notes and sweetness from the bourbon casks.
Finish: Medium, sweet and very pleasant aftertaste.
Overall I rated this whisky 90 / 100 and called it an ABSOLUTE BANGER. And yes it is just that. At the 35-40 euro price point it is very hard to beat. The only thing you have to accept is that this might have batch variatons. One bottle with a bit more sherry portion then the other for example. The taste will differ. But it is what it is. Nevertheless, it's a great bottle and I've never had one that was bad.
Old Pulteney Harbour - Natural Color (?), Chill filtered, 40.0% - 29.3€
The Old Pulteney Harbour matured in hand-selected ex-bourbon casks made from American white oak, which developed the distillery's typical maritime influence in the traditional Dunnage Warehouse near Wick Bay, which is also reflected in the flavour (albeit very subtly) in the bottling. Together with Highland Park and Wolfburn, Pulteney is one of the most northerly Scottish distilleries.
Old Pulteney Harbour is deliciously fragrant with notes of creamy vanilla and coconut up front, followed by rich citrus of marmalade and tangerines, lemon drizzle cake sweetness and spicy undertone of fresh oak.
Taking its name from the point which joins Old Pulteney's hometown of Wick to the North Sea, Old Pulteney Harbour celebrates the brand's connection to the sea. The easy-to-drink single malt introduces whiskey drinkers to the character Old Pulteney is renowned for with the warm, welcoming flavors representing the beginnings of a new journey for whisky fans wanting to take a voyage with Old Pulteney.
This approachable whisky is matured by the sea in a quartet of hand-selected fine American oak ex-bourbon casks, each imparting unique flavour profiles and cocooned by the sea air of the remote coastal distillery. The bright gold whisky is deliciously fragrant with notes of creamy vanilla and coconut up front, followed by rich citrus of marmalade and tangerines, lemon drizzle cake sweetness and a spicy undertone of fresh oak. Sweet tones of raisins and tropical fruits are perfectly balanced with darker tones of hot toffee and fresh tobacco leaf. The finish grows with rich fruit and spice to eventually turn into Old Pulteney's Signature mellow sea brine."
Nose: After opening the bottle and pouring it to a Glencairn it is quite closed, reserved. Of course, it might have a so called "bottle shock". After letting it air for 5-10 minutes it opens up beautifully. Creamy, malty notes. Fresh toast with salted butter. Biscuits. Brine. Lots of vanilla and coconut. Orchard fruit basket, mainly green apples and pears. Lots of citrus notes coming through and a nice spiciness. Quite a fresh, salty, malty nose. My expectations are exceeded with this one for now.
Taste: Creamy and oily. It has a nice body with good viscosity. Nice legs too. Sweet vanilla with salted caramel. Tropical fruits such as pineapple and coconut. Again green apples, pears. Black pepper and cinnamon. Sweet and spicy. Freshly baked bread and sultana jam. Taste is great, not overly complex but also not boring. It has the nice salty DNA of Old Pulteney.
Finish: Medium. Fruity and spicy an the same time. A bit dry. Touch of sea salt and vanilla. A typical Old Pulteney whisky.
Overall I think this is a great entry to Old Pulteney. It carries the distillery DNA plus it was in my opinion matured in good quality casks because there are lots of added flavours to the whisky. Yes it's 40% but it doesn't feel thin due to Old Pulteney's style of whisky and probably, most probably due to the wormtubs. It's a great beginners malt and a great daily sipper to anyone who likes salty whisky. 85 / 100
Tomatin Legacy - Natural Color (?), Non-chill filtered (?), 43% -26.5€
"When Tomatin Distillery was established in 1897, the isolated and idyllic setting of Tomatin was almost perfect. However there wasn't a local workforce; the local inhabitants were scattered shepherds and cattle drovers. The company began a project of construction to accommodate its workforce. Since that time the distillery has been at the heart of the community and the community at the heart of the distillery. This legacy has continued and Tomatin remains one of the few distilleries to provide a home for its dedicated craftsmen.Time in Bourbon barrels and Virgin Oak casks brings a light sweetness to The Tomatin Legacy, a non-peaty scotch which boasts aromas of vanilla bean, white chocolate and cinnamon. On the palate gentle waves of fresh fruit peppered with ginger emerge ahead of a light, clean finish."
Nose: A basket of fresh orchard fruits. Green apples, ripe pears, juicy peaches. Maltiness, honey and oak. Vanilla, toffee and espresso. Some tropical fruits can be also found here such as mango and banana. Lots of nuttiness. Cardamom and cinnamon. A hint of spicynesss. Not a boring nose at all, it is quite fresh and pleasant.
Taste: Fresh, strong, oily. Quite hefty, I was not expecting it. Alcohol tastes a bit higher than it actually is. Quite spicy and oaky. Lots of vanilla, banana an toffee. Nuts and malt. Green apples, pears and peaches. Cinnamon, espresso and black pepper. Again, it is not boring. It is young, untamed and spicy. I like it. It might not be everyones cup of tea (in this case whisky haha).
Finish: Medium. Lots of peppery spicyness, oak and espresso. Then sweet vanilla and toffee. Orchard fruits and malted barley. Great finish.
It was a whisky that started me on my single malt journey but I keep on returning to it every now and then. I would gladly recommend it to beginners and seasoned drinkers too. It is an awesome whisky. A solid whisky that you should buy and enjoy at your own pace. 87 / 100
Glen Moray Elgin Classic Port Cask Finish - Colored, Chill filtered, 40% - 24.5€
"This Glen Moray celebrates our passion for exploring the array of flavours different casks can bring to our whisky. First matured in American oak casks for classic Speyside notes, it is then carefully finished over several months in port casks from Porto Cruz, renowned as the world's No. 1 port. Over time, these sweet Portuguese wine casks enrich our single malt with rich fruits and mellow wine notes and give the whisky a distinctive rosy tint. Light, fruity and balanced, our Port Cask Finish is enjoyed by single malt lovers and whisky newcomers alike."
Nose: The classic Glen Moray DNA. Lots of vanilla with toffee, toasted oak, hints of cinnamon and allspice, some red berries and maybe a wee bit of leather and dark fruit notes.
Taste: Creamy, pleasant, sweet. Vanilla, toffee and oak coming first with a burst of spiciness. Then you get some red apple, ripe pears and red berries with the cinnamon on top.
Finish: Medium length, nothing too crazy. The vanilla sweetness lingers with a hint of oakiness.
I think it is a fairly good single malt whisky if you want to see how a small finish influences the drink. Here the port is there but not overwhelming and it is a spirit driven whisky. I would recommend it because yes it's that pleasant. Great whisky to have around whenever you feel like you want to have something light and sweet. 84 / 100
Summarizing this list, I think these are all great options. A few of them I had many times. If I got any of these bottles for Christmas, I would be very happy. These are all in my top 100 favourite list, and I think your Whisky Lover friends would love it too. I hope I was able to help you out.
